SHOT Show 2018: Toys, Tools, Guns & Rules

One of the great things about SHOT show is all the celebrities you can see.  This year I was fortunate enough to meet Mrs. Julie Golob.  Julie is a veteran, national and international shooting champion and a great spokeswoman for the shooting community.  

She was at the Girls with Guns booth promoting her new book, "Toys, Tools, Guns and Rules".  TTGR is a book designed to introduce guns and gun safety ideas to children.  It is kept simple so children can understand.   

It is a great introduction for children to the world of guns and gun safety.  Grab a copy and read it with your children today.

GunDiva In The Making

The grin is why we win. My daughter with her brand new Daisy Red Ryder. Pink is her favorite color in case you were wondering. I would have repainted it any color or all colors in the rainbow if that was what she preferred. Lessons in The Rules and basic markswomanship have already started with more to follow.

GunDiva: Junior Achievement Award

As I was doing my morning news crawl, I came across this news article from the Daily Mail about a young lady, age 11, in Washington state who bagged an apparently sick cougar that was stalking her 13 year old brother. To me, the article is so full of win (except from the cougar's perspective perhaps) on so many levels.

This girl was taught proper firearms handling and shooting from an early age, she is an avid hunter at the tender age of 11, and she was able to defend her family without hesitation when the need arose. Her dad, who asked her to take the shot since she was the only one with a hunting license with a cougar tag on it, had absolute confidence in her to get the job done.

Now, pardon me while I go look for a deal on a Savage Rascal for my little girl. 

GunDiva Juniorette

I started my kids off pretty young with the shooting thing.  My thought at the time was that if I was going to carry 24/7, then they should be educated about guns and gun safety.  They've never been afraid of guns, because I've never given them any reason to be afraid.  They have a healthy respect for them, but no fear.

I started them with a Browning Buckmark .22 plinking cans.  They loved it.  But I didn't realize until Ashinator went shooting with her Uncle Deejo yesterday that I'd overlooked long guns with her and Monster.  I love long guns.  However, I never carried a long gun, always a pistol, so that's what I wanted them to know.

I had to do some serious un-teaching to get Digger to shoot a shotgun.  His father and his father's friends thought it would be a good idea to hand him a 12 guage shotgun and have him shoot it without any instruction as to how to hold the gun.  I knew that I had to address that issue, so Digger's the only one who's shot a shotgun (and the kid can't miss a clay pigeon).

Deejo changed that yesterday for Ashinator and she had a blast.  Not sure you'll be able to tell how much she had from the photo, though.

Oh yeah, she obviously didn't read the post on Proper Range Attire.  Lucky for her, it's a pump action shotgun that ejects out the side and not a semi-automatic pistol :)
